Berlin, February 27, 1933. The Reichstag is in flames. A young Dutch unemployed man, Marinus van der Lubbe, was found alone in the building. For Hitler, it was a plot by the "Reds". One hundred thousand communists and sympathizers were arrested during the night and in the days that followed and locked up in the first Nazi concentration camps. In March, the Chancellor obtained full powers. On September 21, the trial opened in Leipzig, broadcast on the radio. For the Nazis and the Communists alike, van der Lubbe was the perfect scapegoat. On December 23, 1933, he was sentenced to death, while his four co-defendants were acquitted.

In unspectacular everyday scenes we observe three groups, their dynamics and moods over the course of a day.

In 1982, a fire broke out in the Soviet Antarctic research station Vostok and destroyed the station's power plant. The expedition was left without light or heating right before the four-month long polar night set in, with an outside temperature of -70 °C. The men decided not to ask for help, because they knew that it was nowhere to be found.

The eruption destroyed some 30% of the town's houses and lasted for more than 5 months. Nice narration like in the old days and some nice sound(track) by Magnus Bl. Johannsson.

During the 1948 Arab-Jewish conflict in Palestine, a group of six Israeli soldiers -- including Rachel (Nehama Hendel), a female combatant -- is trapped in enemy territory. While trying to escape, the soldiers learn of an Arab plan to attack a nearby village. Fearing the worst, the group must now race home to warn their compatriots. The Palestinians, however, are hot on their tracks, and time is running out. As the group suffers a series of casualties, their chances for survival diminish.
