Crossroads - A Decision is a Hong Kong TV-Short starring Andy Lau

Young men endure challenging flight training in the Yokaren, a program feeding new pilots into the Army and Navy. By the time of the filming, the pressure of the war had led the government to shorten the training and expand the age range of the recruits. Yokaren was highly selective, and thus an object of great fascination and desire for boys and young men. In this Navy–sponsored film, Setsuko Hara plays the daughter of a family that often entertains recruits on their days off—a surrogate sister to many trainees. Her fragile younger brother aspires to join the program, but is rejected. With perseverance and much support from Hara and their mother, he surmounts his weaknesses and becomes a flier.

Karen Bender is a plastic surgery expert who will soon be promoted to Senior Physician. Her family life with her husband Christoph and little daughter Kim could hardly be more harmonious. However, when a routine check-up reveals that the seven-year-old is a lethal tumor, Karen is unexpectedly caught up in her past: Professor Victor Novak, an internationally renowned neurosurgeon, is the only one who can save Kim's life. But years ago Karen had an affair with Viktor during a joint engagement in the Balkan war.

The animated short shows how fate can determine the decision making process, even at the highest levels, where one would expect responsibility and careful reasoning. It does so by lightheartedly exposing the supposed argumentation as nothing more than the result of an absurdly complicated and haphazard Rube Goldberg-like contrivance.

The film's director Pushpa Rawat brings her scrutiny to bear upon her closest female friends, her ex-boyfriend, his parents and her own family through interview/conversations. She asks, and reflects herself, on uncomfortable questions about jati, choice, personal freedom, happiness and compromise. Rawat made Nirnay in collaboration with Anupama Srinivasan, a documentary filmmaker and director of the IAWRT Asian Women’s Film Festival.
