The movie opens with a young boy, Lyman, watching Duke Ellington on TV in the dark. It is 1955 and he is dressed in a baseball uniform. His mother, Marilyn, looks on in delight. After a moment, his father, Raymond, walks up on the scene and is disgusted by what he sees. He rails at his wife and takes his son outside to practice pitching the baseball. As Marilyn watches the two of them practice through her kitchen window, she reflects back on a time when she was a young celebrated pianist at The Grand Ole Opry. It is the day that she met Raymond, and he woos her into his life with the promise of making her star. That does not happen. Instead, he moves her to Redlands, California, where he purchases a withered orange grove. She eventually gives birth to Lyman, whom she raises under the watchful eye of her overbearing husband. In secret, she starts to teach Lyman piano, who eagerly agrees to keep their lessons from his father.

On a night so cold it hurts to breathe, Soft as Snow and Cold as Ice meet Thomas, a drunk young man, who's been dumped on the outskirts of town. When Thomas suggests the two men should walk back with him, they persuade him to stay the night.

A man crossing Maine at the end of a solo cross country bicycle trip strikes up an unlikely friendship with an ex-Marine and his oddball younger sister. At the same time he reconnects remotely with his estranged but dying father in Germany and finds himself forced to make an irrevocable decision.

After a moose gets germs from a ball that a raccoon sneezed on, and a musical number from said germs, a bear has to nurse the moose back to health.

He's chased by an army of knights, but both he and his pursuers ride music-hall half-horse costumes in lieu of real steads. He proceeds to fight, Fairbanks-like, dozens of swordsmen at once, and defeats his rival one-on-one, leaving him to marry the princess in a state ceremony.
