Equinox is the scientific term for the time when day and night astronomically are in an equal length anywhere on earth. It takes place every year in September and March respectively. For astronomers, the March equinox in the northern hemisphere signifies the beginning of a new spring. Clara Busch's abstract video piece, the shortest work at this year's festival, marks the changing times in its own concise and suggestive way. Organic forms that at a closer look turn out to be of an indefinite and artificial nature, present themselves to us in a digital universe in which we are fully immersed for the four minutes this very special equinox lasts.
In 16mm, hole-punched black frames, their inner circles filled with plants gleaned in Seattle, animated and optically-printed, interact with the complex rhythms of Barcelona-born, New York-trained composer and jazz bassist Alexis Cuadrado’s group, Noneto Ibérico.

A film by James Benning
A teenage horror film buff finds herself facing off against real-world supernatural evil in the form of an obsessive stalker with a deadly lycanthropic secret.
As we ascend a mountain, we move backwards in time. Like most of Benning's films, Spring Equinox is at once direct and mystical. Simple images and landscapes become charged with meaning. As the film develops, changes in altitude and time give way to subtle shifts in light and texture; the result is as thrilling as it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Documentary on nature's ultimate abyss, the black hole. It is the darkest thing in the universe and its gravity is so powerful that not even light can escape. Most start out as brilliant stars which, after millions of years, eventually collapse forming a bottomless pit from which there is no escape. Narrated by actor John Hurt and directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Richard Smith, the program is a journey into interstellar space to explore these mysterious "prisons of light", via an imaginary computer-generated space ship. Guides for the journey include Professor Stephen Hawking, Britain's Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees, and Homer Simpson. The program also examines the history surrounding black holes, from the first conception of them in 1859 to the present day.
An experimental short, mixing 8mm, super-8, 16mm, and iPhone video. On a trek through a rare California snowfall on a highway between L.A. and San Francisco, portals and wormholes develop in the image itself, the canvas shifts, and surprises present themselves as anomalies within the frame.
“What would another world look like, one that is carried by this feeling of empathy, of mutual love between humans and animals, between species? How would our relationship with a largely domesticated nature and environment change? How would established relationships of power and strength be redefined with this thought?”—Tasja Langenbach.
