This inventive, exhaustive seven-hour film looks at the rise, reign and demise of Adolf Hitler. German director Hans Jürgen Syberberg, who was a child during World War II, doesn't try to recreate history to the letter. Instead, he places his actors -- many of whom play several roles -- on a stage and has them reenact events based on and inspired by Hitler's life. The action combines traditional narration and historical characters, but also idiosyncratic tweaks, like the use of puppets.

After a successful year as a businesswoman, Munich boutique owner Marianne Neuhaus decides to go on holiday. On the way to Hannes Kleebauer's horse stud in Austria, she meets the likeable blonde Danish woman Lil, who gives her a lift in her car. Kleebauer is a handsome, middle-aged man and widowed. He would like to get married again, but his jealous, underage daughter Christl is rebellious and has nothing better to do than scare off any potential marriage candidates as subtly as possible. And so, as expected, Marianne and Lil don't have an easy time of it when they arrive at Kleebauer's horse farm.

This film portrays the suffering of a generation that only ended five to twelve. " The film premiered in Cologne on November 20, 1953, but was immediately banned by Federal Interior Minister Gerhard Schröder in agreement with the interior ministers of the federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany.
