What would happen if everything stopped? If the engine gears of the economy jammed for good? The Japanese island of Ikeshima is a place that seems to be ahead of its time, showing us a possible future. The few remaining inhabitants live in a surreal setting, clinging firmly to a normality that seems however to escape them. A dreamlike journey, which forces us to think about our relationship with the planet but also about social isolation and loneliness.

A case-hardened cop is pitted against a young eco-terrorist. The title "island" is an artificial construct in Tokyo Bay, a mountain of garbage, a by-product of Japan’s economic boom years. The film’s protagonist Alan works there, almost buried under society’s detritus; his growing obsession with the search for “what has been lost” turns him into a "dangerous" activist. He targets the industrialist Wada, whose chemical factory secretly discharges toxic waste into the environment. But the cop Terayama, who thought he’d seen it all, starts researching eco-activism and soon suspects the haunted, taciturn young man he’s encountered in the neighborhood.
Chu Tien-Wen, frequent screenwriter for Hou Hsiao-Hsien, makes her directorial debut with this entry in The Inspired Island documentary series. With Hou as producer, cinematographer Yao Hung-I and editor Liao ChingSung, Chu takes a deep dive into the story of her parents, famed authors Chu Hsi-Ning and Liu Mu-Sha. Through family albums, old letters and interviews with fellow writers, Chu crafts a deeply personal portrait of her parents’ romance, literary careers, family roots and the unfinished opus her father left behind.
