So when a teenage girl was sexually assaulted at a pre-season football party in 2012, no one came forward with information. True-crime blogger Alex Goddard set out to uncover the truth, piecing together the details of the crime through cell phone footage and photos that made their way to YouTube, as well as a nearly minute-by-minute account of events on social media. In the process, she uncovered both the perpetrators and the entire culture of complicity that enabled them. The ensuing trial, which made national headlines, cut to the very heart of nationwide debates about rape culture.

Hilary Harris’ nervy tour of Robert Moses’ New York hearkens back to the classic city symphonies of the 1920s but cut to fit the “go go go” energy of the new era. “The most exciting thing in film is movement,” Harris once wrote, and in Highway he shows why, shooting from a moving car for the road itself of its ramps, signs and overall pretzel logic. The film can be enjoyed purely as a riot of graphic forms, but at a deeper level Harris is revising the traditional panorama to capture the automotive experience of urban space. He peppers the expressway view with all manner of camera effects, but it’s finally his simple fascination with the changing shape of the road at speed that makes the screen come alive. A story with and about high school students, which bears the imprint of the current reality of the problems faced by young people of the last generations: love, money, influence, drugs. The action unfolds on several levels, the characters, well defined, get into conflicts, find themselves in love and wake up in situations that sometimes seem desperate. The starting point is a crime whose perpetrator is initially unknown, but as the characters appear, they begin to reveal themselves, to interact and especially to act, the murderer always seems to be closer to being discovered. There is no lack of dramatic moments, suspense, humor, moralizing conclusions and, obviously, the completely unexpected end. A film that paints an intimate portrait of the young generation. The director manages to look with detachment but with a fine spirit of observation, without judging, however, drawing and transmitting consistent conclusions.
