Angela Gheorghiu, hauntingly seductive of tone and an artist of acute sensitivity, enjoys a special relationship with London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where she first captured the imagination and hearts of the world’s opera-lovers. This 2001 live recital with orchestra showcases Gheorghiu in roles she has championed in the theatre or on record (Adriana Lecouvreur, Madama Butterfly, Manon), and provides tantalising glimpses of the magic she brings to Bellini, Mozart and Handel – and the music of her native Romania and Broadway.

This being an annual, Xmas holiday video, you can be guaranteed good cheer on a platter and maybe a plop in a bowl or two. In this video we visit a landmark hotel in Denver, Colorado, and then proceed to catch up on what’s new with my mom in The Bronx (some BIG changes!). Sprinkled here and there are many happy goodies and a few spicy ones too. It’s a video full of young, old and middle-aged mayhem on a positive spiral of delightful drainage.
A video essay by Raed Rafei.
Between You and Me (Tangled Garden, Act III, Scene I) looks at the internalization of homophobia and fatalism present in mainstream representations of the AIDS pandemic, as it reflects on the conflict between grief and desire in a gay man's psyche. The film challenges the viewer to turn their red ribbons into real action both on the streets and in bed, and to resist the industry of AIDS.
In the past, the now 82-year-old Leo happily traveled with his wife Riet to faraway lands. But since the first signs of Alzheimer’s, the father-in-law of filmmaker Marco Niemeijer prefers his own backyard above anywhere else. There, surrounded by his beloved trees and plants, Leo tries to keep hold of his increasingly confusing existence. Over the course of a year, Niemeijer films Leo every month, from season to season. Whether rain or shine, Leo can always be found in his trouble-free refuge. At first his words and actions are coherent, but as time passes, these become increasingly illogical. Leo begins to wander more aimlessly, playing with a thought and then losing it. Various mantras help him deal with his situation, such as "What I’m not looking for, I will not miss." The intimate yard scenes alternate with old home videos made by Leo during his wanderlust years.
