Call him the Duke of Denmark, as this is the second superb Ellington performance recorded in that country to be released in 2003 alone. It's also an appropriate follow-up to The Intimate Duke Ellington; whereas the latter showcases Ellington as a solo pianist and in small group settings, Live at the Tivoli Gardens features the Ellington Orchestra in all its splendor. It includes two approximately 70-minute sets recorded a few days apart in 1971, when the Duke was 72.

Elton’s favorite venue to perform in, a band 15-strong with long-time members and newcomers alike, a star-studded line-up of guest artists (Billy Joel, Mary J. Blige, Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams, Anastacia, Kiki Dee), and a set list of hits from every corner of his amazing career. What more could a fan ask for? Those in attendance still speak about these shows – this video is in fact a combination of two evenings at MSG – with great fondness and the surprise addition of The Beatles’ “Come Together”, a song Elton had never played live before, only adds to the concert’s fan status. Lan’s Garden is about aging. Lan was once a proud matriarch who defined herself by her ability to care for her children. Now, the direction of care has been reversed: Lan’s children must come to take care of her and fix what she breaks. Lan is neither sick nor injured, and there is no dramatic plot point that leads to her downfall; she is simply growing old. If she suffers, it is only at the consequence of her own actions as she resists her gradual loss of agency. Every character in this film is a sympathetic one, and we take turns seeing Lan through each one’s eyes: the concerned daughter, the devoted son-in-law, the curious grandson. And then we are left with Lan, alone in her world.
