The Garden Beyond is a dramatised portrayal of the life of bed-ridden Perth poet William Soutar - the first independently produced Scottish film to be broadcast on the BBC One UK network. Made in 1977, it reflected, as well as Soutar's own passion and commitment, the debate then current in the run-up to the 1979 devolution referendum. Forty-odd years later with a second independence referendum in prospect, it has, we believe, a renewed relevance.
The Royal Ballet performs a production of Kenneth MacMillan's ballet: Manon. In decadent 18th century Paris, the young, beautiful and naive Manon (Tamara Rojo) is torn between a life of privilege and luxury with the wealthy Monsieur GM or love with the poor student Des Grieux (Carlos Acosta). Manon has become one the Royal Ballet's signature works since its creation in 1974.
Scattered in seemingly random order, on the screen, we see the light that traverses the kinetic fields of Bill Brand’s latest film August Garden. Made for a group exhibition at Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre (Paris), the film accompanies a series of flower ink paintings, carefully made by the artist. Before, in the first seconds, we’re able to see an animation of August Garden 07 (ink and watercolor on xuan paper, 9″ x13″, 2019), which titillates lively for brief moments.

Using archive footage it tells the story of Welwyn Garden City "a town built on an ideal of better living. A town founded by a near penniless Ebenezer Howard. "My mother always wanted a garden, and now she has one. A poem about family genealogy that highlights the relationship between a name and a place. *** Tatars and other non-Russian communities in the USSR were forced to go through Russification - the spread of Russian language, culture, and people into non-Russian cultures and regions. Forcing the many minority groups within Russia to accept the Russian culture was an attempt to prevent self-determination and separatism. As a result my mother, a Tatar woman born in Moscow, never properly learned her mother tongue or practiced Tatar traditions outside her family home. Composed of super 8 home movies." –Y.B.
A study of atmospheric modulations, shifting colors and textures in a meditative sequence of images. The rhythms and tonal impressions of details flow between spaces and offer a kind of complexity and contrast to a perceived sense of time. From slow to fast, the sequence merges ideas of place and identity with time and introspection. In this piece, I explore the flora of Grand Cayman in July.
the Gardens at Hidcote Manor, Mottisfont Abbey, Sissinghurst Castle With a cameo appearance by Nigel Nicolson Why did American-born Major Lawrence Johnston spend much of his lifetime creating a storied garden in a remote part of the Cotswolds? What is Graham Stuart Thomas's glorious collection of antique roses doing in a medieval English Abbey? What persuaded author, poet and plantswoman Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson to buy a derelict ruin on the edge of the Kentish Weald to create their fabled garden?
