Orchestra from Svizzera Italiana Conductor: Roderick Brydon Soloist: Tzimon Barto, Piano
The historic Toscanini television concerts with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Broadcast #1 was of a concert on April 3, 1948, at NBC Studio 8H, featuring Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 ("Choral"). (Concerts #1 and #2 were released on "Vol. 1" in the DVD series.)
The music is not Beethoven's most familiar, but it is absolutely charming. The concerto is appealing in its melodic material and the intricate interactions among the soloists and orchestra. The Choral Fantasy features a long piano solo that Beethoven wrote for himself, plus a choral melody that sounds like a preliminary sketch for the last movement of his Ninth Symphony. Both works pose unusual balance challenges, to which Barenboim and the recording engineers rise impressively.
One of the highlights of Simon Rattle’s 16-year tenure as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic was his final cycle of the Beethoven symphonies (BPHR160091), a set that rightly walked off with the 2016 Limelight Orchestral Recording of the Year. Now that he has moved to London, as a more than worthy pendant, the BPO has released a compelling set of the Beethoven piano concertos from 2010 with Mitsuko Uchida, a cycle that possesses all the advantages of live performance with, as far as I can hear, none of the drawbacks.
In Vienna's Musikverein, Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic celebrates Ludwig Van Beethoven's 200th birthday with a joyful performance of his Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major. Maestro Bernstein conducts the orchestra from the keyboard in this historic concert.
The poignant story of Blake Caldwell, who purchased and subsequently destroyed the Beethoven film franchise in the 1990's.
At the Easter Festival 2015 in Baden Baden the Berliner Philharmoniker were all over Beethoven. Under the baton of Bernard Haitink, who is regarded as an authority on the music of Beethoven, they played the famous Symphony No. 6 "Pastorale". For the Violin Concerto the Berliner Philharmoniker were joined by multi-awarded Isabelle Faust.
The Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 2 & 7 performed by Seiji Ozawa, who turned 80! Bonus content includes valuable footage of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy (piano: Martha Argerich

After decades of work on Beethoven’s original scores, the Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder offers a definitive interpretation of all of Beethoven’s piano concertos in this series of live recordings of his ecstatically acclaimed performances in the Musikverein in Vienna. Buchbinder conducts the Vienna Philharmonic from the piano and achieves a rare degree of tension and chamber-like concentration. “There is no one else who plays Beethoven with such classical perfection and at such a high level.” Der Kurier, Vienna
