Amid the nation’s ongoing debate over health care reform, this bracing new documentary examines the everyday realities of Americans who lack access to affordable medical treatment. Filmed during three days in the operation of a “no-cost” clinic set up annually at Bristol, Tennessee’s NASCAR speedway, Remote Area Medical documents the range of medical care the eponymous organization provides to low-income patients in the heart of Appalachia.

Bettina and Marcus, a passionate couple, live in a canteen in the middle of a vast field with endless lines of pylons. Marcus, trying to set up his own business, works as a foreman in the maintenance of these power-lines. Bettina, bored and longing for a better life, runs the canteen for the workingmen. When Marcus hires a Hungarian engineer, Szabolcs, to become part of his company, their unconventional way of living takes a new turn. The roving camera intimately examines the disregarded plastics and thriving weeds that decorate the space while continually auto-focusing, creating a fractured journey around the temporary wasteland. On the soundtrack, passing cars, trains, people and other sounds of the space intermingle with semi-musical textures and field recordings, situating it somewhere between being part of the urban environment, and existing in a world of its own, a colorful landscape scattered with fascinating minutiae.
