Stephen lives in Berlin and is unemployed. Together with his ex-girlfriend he shares custody of his son, Jasper, but while other fathers go with their children to the movies, they browse through their days, collecting old clothes or returnable bottles. Jasper loves his father and covers for him towards his mother and the child welfare office, but it is increasingly difficult for Stephen to bear his own free fall through the German social network. He knows what personal and professional mistakes he has made and as he realizes that he now runs the risk of failing as a father, he decides on a calm farewell and prepares himself for a serious act of desperation.

The film has two story-lines or "realities". The main characters are lovers, Maria and Vasin who discover they have access to an alternate reality wherein missed opportunities have become realities. In the film's first act, subtitled "The Pilot", Maria finds that she is in love with Vasin again after rejecting his marriage proposal twenty years earlier, when he was a lieutenant in the Russian Air Force. Vasin also lives a life of regrets, and wishes he was able to pursue his unfulfilled dream of becoming a film director. In the second act, "A Film Director", Maria is transported into a different reality. In this reality, she marries Vasin, and he becomes a film director. The plot questions whether they are truly happy with each other, despite having their wishes granted.

Antonio (Ricky Mergold) is a 16 year old boy from a village in the Mexican province, living the awakening of consciousness with the intensity of the contradictions that surround him: a dogmatic religion, mediocre educational institutions, corrupt politicians an a society full of conformity. His life changes when a young teacher with a genuine desire to teach their students comes to the town, a guide that encourages them to live with dignity and to be critical of the world around them. This story is full of drama and misadventures, which Antonio lives without proper orientation and promiscuity.

A widowed Latvian father's quest for a much-loved Dutch pen pal, whom he hasn't heard from in three decades, provides the basis of this comedy-drama. The father is accompanied by his traumatized and mute eight-year-old son whom he had to kidnap from a Riga hospital. Together, the two flee towards Holland where the father Yuris hopes to find his long-lost friend Marie, whom he remembers as a great beauty. During the long journey, father and son have several funny adventures, many of which occur because neither father nor son speak much Dutch. They finally arrive at Marie's door empty-handed. What they find, gives them little hope, for the lithe young idealist of Yuris' dreams has become middle-aged and cynical.

Bharathapuzha is about the lives and struggles of Sugandhi, someone who had kept the doors to the outside world wide open, where and in which she seeks freedom. She enacts several lives in one, yet struggles to find a place of her own in the world of men. She is a river that flows despite everything, and takes in everything in its ebbs and tides. Bharathapuzha is also about the city of Thrissur, the city of cultural expressions, festivities and tiger dance.
