"Western all'italiana" is a documentary produced and broadcast by the satellite broadcaster Studio Universal in 2004, on the occasion of the broadcasting of a selection of Italian western films, the so-called "spaghetti westerns". A drunken joyride turns tragic when a group of college kids accidentally run over a schoolgirl. Desperate to cover up the accident, they dismember the girl and bury her body in a remote abandoned building. Five years later, upon hearing the building is slated for demolition, they journey back to the grisly tomb to move the corpse, only to find an angry soul intent on bloody revenge.
College students Apple and Lisa sit in the cafeteria to chat and drink slimming smoothies. Apple is dealing with a major crisis. She can’t stop eating while she teaches her Zumba class at the recreational center. And it’s getting worse and worse. Like, all the girls are noticing! The film explores the critical stance of ‘folklore’ as a source of knowledge and its possible connection to alternative social and representational models in Palestine. Images of women performing draw connections between latent stories of water wells and communal rituals associated with disappearance, mourning and death. The only narration in the film is a song, which is sung by Palestinian singer Maya Khaldi. Its lyrics are a collage of different folk tales.
