A camp of Russian gypsies, dancing and playing music. A trench-coated bomber sneaks into the palace, where we see Rice-Puddin', the mad monk, cheating at a jigsaw puzzle. He spies the activity in the gypsy camp and orders a henchman to fetch the gypsy girl. The villagers revolt as a result, sending The Mad Monk scrambling on his horse; they stuff a bomb into his pants just as he turns his horse into a helicopter, and it explodes.

The Wake follows a young Englishman as he is brought to an Irish wake in an isolated house in the middle of the Irish countryside. Little does he know that this wake contains a lot of customs that aren’t so traditional…

'The watchman, the sleeper and the dreamer' are the nicknames for the three friends who lived in that dorm. Every year there's a reunion, and this time it was Youp' s turn to take care of it. While he talks about that reunion, he explains how his friends got their nicknames and what became of them. While doing so, he reviews all the topics of that year and provides these of his comments.

The Wake is the title of a large-scale multimedia project, the main element of which is an eight-hour long silent movie. The film is based on Finnegans Wake by James Joyce (London 1939), a limit-transgressing, perhaps even limit-dissolving book that not only transgresses the limits of what literature is and is capable of, but inscribes transgressions on almost all conceivable levels. It is at the same time dream book, history book and necrology. It is almost impossible to determine whether we are dealing with a long poem, a prose narrative or a piece of drama.
