A Letter From

A worthy companion to Ray’s Charulata, the film is based on a short story by Rabindranath Tagore where a young wife goes against her family to save a young girl from the atrocities of the society.

Yoshinaga, a real-estate agent, has a young female customer one day. She asks him to take her to the apartment where she used to live. When he plays a videotape left in that cavant room which shows some signs of its ex-resident, Yoshinaga gets lost in another fantastic world. After a while, Yoshinaga and the girl come back to their respective daily lives... A pop, colorful, yet at times a heartaching road movie, which leads to elsewhere.

Letter from Beirut documents the filmmaker's return to Beirut during one of the lulls, three years after the outbreak of the civil war, animated by the urge to return. She is confronted by the physical, emotional and psychological ravages of the war, terrified and sorrowful, she cannot find her place in the city. In that quest, she communicates with everyday people, friends, neighbors, people riding the bus across the city's eastern and western flanks. To pace her journeying and dramatic unraveling of the film, Saab borrows the guise of a letter read in a voice-over, written by world-renowned poet Etel Adnan. A rare document from the civil war, Letter from Beirut lays bare and spontaneously how people make sense of their everyday in the midst of chaos, violence, terror and sorrow.

Nothing happens out of the blue, and certainly not this letter. A middle-aged man reads a letter written to him.

It took the letter 28 years to arrive from Berlin, East Germany to Tel-Aviv, Israel. But what troubles Menachem is the content of the letter. He's afraid to find out what the brother he lost contact with 40 years ago may have written in it. With the help of Moshe, his neighbor, Menachem dares to confront a secret that's been haunting him since his adolescence, a secret born out of a decision made during the dark days of the Second World War. That decision changed his life and now Menachem finds that an even more difficult one lies ahead.

In 1971, António Lobo Antunes' life is brutally interrupted when he is drafted into the Portuguese Army to serve as a doctor in one of the worst zones of the Colonial War – the East of Angola. Kazuo Nishii, renowned editor and photography critic, died in 2001 of stomach cancer. Two months earlier he contacted Naomi Kawase, whose works he admired, to document the remaining weeks of his life. Kawase visits him in the hospital and films the progression of his sickness and the conversations between the two.

The footage contains scenery from various areas in Tokyo such as Akasaka, Ueno Park, and Shimbashi. As Korean subtitles are included, it is presumed to have been produced for the Korean audience. The film vividly documents sights and scenes of Tokyo including Tenryumon, a Chinese-style building that was a popular spot in Ueno Park before its destruction in the Great Tokyo Air Raid of 1945; the activities of the Tokyo City Youth League, established in 1925, who played a role in the support of the wartime system; people walking downtown; and the movement of a train from Shimbashi Station through Tokyo Station to Kanda Station. Acquired in 2010, and transferred in 4K resolution.

Alaouié presents the stories of four exiles from Beirut. Their only connection is the voice of the narrator and their situation of living in exile in Europe. Told with a subtle humor, the film sketches four highly individual portraits of people, whose lives have taken unexpected turns due to the madness of the Civil War.
