A Letter From

A filmmaker’s self-portrait, asking hard questions of herself and of us. Invoking Aurore Clément as a kind of stand-in or proxy, a glamorous counterpart to Akerman who sports a drawn-on moustache. What is cinema for? Who is it for? If the Mosaic prohibition on making graven images includes film images, then where does that leave a Jewish filmmaker?

The family of Giannis Anastasiadis, leaves the village of Aydoğdu in Pontus and takes the road of refuge, at the end of 1919, while his father has already perished in the forced labor camps. The family scatters like the dust of Anatolia. His sisters, Kerekia and Victoria, die of typhus. Giannis and Isaac are separated in 1919 and do not see each other for more than 60 years. Giannis comes to Greece, but he never stops looking for his brother and writing letters to him. After many attempts, a Turkish Wali delivers Giannis's letter to Isaac and then the road opens, so that the two brothers can meet again.

Bataaxalu Ndakaaru (Letter from Dakar) surveys aspects of the vibrant grass roots arts and culture scene in the Senegalese capital of Dakar. Part of a series of promotional films commissioned by Romania's National Tourism Office in the early 1970s with the aim of reconnecting diasporic communities with the country they left behind. In this case, the film is addressed to Jews who emigrated in the context of the Second World War or were sold by the Romanian state to the State of Israel starting in the 50s and settled in Israel and the USA - therefore, a target group made up of seniors, probably retired , possibly prosperous, eager to revisit the places of youth and willing to forget, temporarily, the traumas associated with them.

Letter from Tokyo is a documentary film that looks at art, culture and politics in Tokyo, Japan. Shot over three months during the summer of 2018, and with a particular focus on grass roots arts initiatives, the use of public space, and queer politics, the film provides a snapshot of Japan’s capital in the run up to the 2020 olympics.

Commissioned for S-AIR’s 2020 residency programme, Letter from Sapporo (2021) is a collage film offering a glimpse of daily life in the Japanese city of Sapporo. The film is the product of approximately 16 participants capturing material with their smartphones. Focusing on moments of stillness, intimacy, labour and humour, disparate material is wedded into a compelling and coherent whole by Quaintance’s subtle editing, original music and vivid sound design.

In 1845, the first Korean to ascend to priesthood was born. His first name is Andrew Kim Tae Gon. Despite all the persecution and suffering against Catholicism, he wanted to practice equality and philanthropy. Arrested during an expedition, he chooses martyrdom after bitter torture. He was 25 years old. Kim Tae Gon, a young man who took a journey toward hope until the last moment, asks young people in 2021. "Are you a Catholic?"

Film director James produced a short film under the pandemic. He invited his good friend Man as his main cast. After the completion of the short film, Man was suddenly arrested and put behind bar. James was worrying about if Man could adapt the life in prison. James planned to write letters to Man. When he started to write, James is feeling helpless that he found his daily life during the pandemic might somehow similar to what Man was confronting.

Ngor is a young man living in a Senegalese village who wishes to marry Coumba. Ongoing drought in the village has affected its crop of groundnuts and as a result, Ngor cannot afford the bride price for Coumba. He goes to Senegal's capital city, Dakar, to try to earn more money and is exploited there. He returns to the villagers and shares his experiences of the city with the other men. The story, which shows the daily lives of the villagers, is told in the form of a letter to a friend from a villager, voiced by Faye.

In 2069, a few rolls of films are found in a regeneration center occasionally. Then scientists extract the genes from the hair which were left on the films to give a cat -Huami a new life. With human’s consciousness and the memories which belongs to the past time, Huami write a letter to her owner in 2019…
