' She haunts you, Jane Austen , I mean.' ... But Annie isn't the only one obsessed with the great novelist; Shorty, an academic scavenger, believes he has tracked down some letters revealing an unexpected side to Miss Austen's nature.

'La Mamma Morta’ is an aria from the opera Andrea Chenier that is also well-known for its use in a memorable sequence in the Oscar award-winning Philadelphia. Thirty years on, this new short film from WNO includes a brand-new recording of the aria featured alongside recreated scenes that better encapsulate the perspectives of people living with HIV today. To mark World AIDS Day 2023, the Welsh National Orchestra released a special new version of La mamma morta, featuring WNO Orchestra, soprano Camilla Roberts and Nathaniel Hall from Channel 4’s It’s a Sin. Released as part of the last rendition in the Three Letters project, this film aims to tackle societal stigma around HIV.

Letty Shell, a clerk in a London brokerage office, is discouraged by her lack of fine clothes and social position. She becomes infatuated with Nevill Letchmere, a debonair idler from a good family, and believes that he wants to marry her, but after her boss, Bernard Mandeville, who has risen to power and wealth, and who wants to marry Letty, warns Letchmere to keep away from her, Letchmere confesses that he is married. Disappointed, Letty accepts Mandeville's proposal, but when she sees Mandeville's boorishness in a restaurant, she returns to Letchmere. Just as she is about to become his mistress, Letchmere receives word that his married sister has eloped with a lover. When he curses his sister for acting like a "shop girl," Letty realizes that he views her and her class without respect. She leaves and accepts the love of her faithful friend Richard Perry, a poor photographer, whose rich uncle is going to help him in business

Letter to My Tribe started with a question: Why don’t more Jews and Israelis speak out about Palestine? Over many years my mother, who represents a more messianic perspective, and I have had numerous arguments, some recorded, some not. These form the backbone of this video essay in which Israelis and Jews, journalists, activists and a rabbi are interviewed, and in which documentation of actions on the ground, in the West Bank, are woven with more personal family histories and journeys to Iraq and to Poland.

As part of a workshop run by Nele Wohlatz at the University of the Arts Hamburg, this series of video letters was sent from April to August 2020 between the filmmakers’ respective hometowns of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Fukushima, Japan. Their contents extends from the artists’ somewhat restricted daily lives during COVID, to their dreams, anxieties, and explorations of their local environment. In Suzuki’s case, his hometown of Fukushima sustained severe damage in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, which is a recurring subject in his wider work. “All of a sudden, I found myself participating in an attempt to make a video letter without leaving my room,” he writes. While the letters are mostly filmed in a single location, they in part take place in digital space, building up an impression of three-dimensional intimacy with their “writers.”
