The tenth video for the exposition of the Center of Slavic Writing "The Word". The Slovo Center is an exhibition and educational space dedicated to the history and fate of the Russian language. It tells how the spoken and written word changes over time and how people, their values and habits change with it.

It took the letter 28 years to arrive from Berlin, East Germany to Tel-Aviv, Israel. But what troubles Menachem is the content of the letter. He's afraid to find out what the brother he lost contact with 40 years ago may have written in it. With the help of Moshe, his neighbor, Menachem dares to confront a secret that's been haunting him since his adolescence, a secret born out of a decision made during the dark days of the Second World War. That decision changed his life and now Menachem finds that an even more difficult one lies ahead.

Citations from love letters and poems written between Karl Marx and his fiancée Jenny von Westphalen during their teenage years are combined with images, paintings, and beautiful, atmospheric landscapes of places connected to Marx.

The viewer thus gets to know the young Engels personally, learning about the significant moments of his development from a bourgeois-liberal upbringing to the theoretical partner of Karl Marx. But both carried their love and loyalty through life. Together with them, we reread letters from the front and relive the happiness of love and the bitterness of loss.

T. finds a letter. Instead of just dropping it in a mailbox, he decides, conscientious as he is, to deliver it personally. He wanders the entire world, discovers astounding forms of existence, but cannot be hindered from his duty and keeps looking until he finally finds the address. There, he finds out that he has delivered his own judgment.

Commissioned for S-AIR’s 2020 residency programme, Letter from Sapporo (2021) is a collage film offering a glimpse of daily life in the Japanese city of Sapporo. The film is the product of approximately 16 participants capturing material with their smartphones. Focusing on moments of stillness, intimacy, labour and humour, disparate material is wedded into a compelling and coherent whole by Quaintance’s subtle editing, original music and vivid sound design.

The film displays a critical, female point of view on the idea of romantic modern love in western society. Its main purpose is to dismantle the "knight in shining armor" myth.
