A Journey

The Amazing Journey is an Israeli documentary TV series that explores and studies cultures, their history, religion, ceremonies and geography, through their reflection in the local food. The 7th season of The Amazing Journey will take place in the USA, where the two presenters would explore some of America's best cuisines.

"A Long Journey" tells the story of three siblings who reach adolescence in the late 1960's. The documentary's storyline follows the youngest brother's travels around the world. Worried that he would enter the struggle for freedom against the Brazilian dictatorship, his family sent Heitor to London. There however, he dives head on into the "Swinging London" and, just like the European and American youth of the time period, he experiments with drugs and the mystic allure of India. In the nine years he has traveled around the world, from 1969 to 1978, he has regularly written to his family. The documentary features interviews with Heitor today, his letters and off-screen comments of Heitor's sister, Lúcia Murat, the director of the movie.

From a collaboration between the Murmurante Theater and Línea de Sombra Theater, arises El viaje immóvil, a study on suicide. With testimonies of the members of the P.I.A.S. (Comprehensive Suicide Attention Program), a woman expresses her decision to take her life. Through her performative actions, she forces us to accompany her on this purpose-built journey to formulate questions and dispel myths about suicide. Is it a creation? It's spread? Is it a mental health problem or is it a social problem?

In this film, shots from two voyages unfold in parallel. First, 8mm images made at the beginning of the seventies by an unknown traveler: this 20-minute film was found at a flea market. A handwritten text described an itinerary, while the boxes indicated the years 1973 and 1975. These shots, left as they are, punctuate super8 images filmed by me during two recent trips, in 2008 and 2010, organized in the sequence with respect to the itinerary that I had followed. The soundtrack for my images comes from the ambient sounds recorded on location as well as from online sharing sites, while the older images have been left silent. It is a film of snapshots revealed and developed by a gaze, taken in a geography dreamed up by the author: not a travel journal but a travel film: a voyage to the interior of a signifier, a desire of a poetics of image and sound.

Made during the inspection of the Brazilian border with Venezuela and British Guiana, this film depicts the Amazon River and the boat traffic from several neighbouring countries, the cities of Santarém and Manaus, and the expedition up the Rio Branco to Boa Vista, where farming is practiced. At the boundary with Venezuela, Cândido Rondon receives a visit from the chiefs of the local tribes. The film ends with an expedition up Mount Roraimã.

Dipendra Bhandari follows a family from Rolpa as they head up north to the Himalayan foothills in search of the yarsagumba, the fungus that grows out of caterpillars prized for its virile properties. Loïc, formerly worker in a gravel quarry, has lost all of his memory after an accident, and cut himself off from the world. One day, an event pushes him to go outside, where he witnesses the first snowfall since his amnesia. Loïc gets absorbed by long forgotten sensations and wanders. In his mind, he finds the way back to his quarry.
