A reflexive exploration of oneself through extensive production processes, ‘A JOURNEY TO CHRIST INSANE’ investigates themes of memory, existentialism, indeterminacy, birth and death, labour, and evolution. Through found footage, painted animation, data moshing, wildlife photography and process documentation, varied visual materials were developed and digitally augmented. These disparate materials were then converted into raw audio data. These images and their sonifications then served as the founding stimulus for a musical accompaniment, featuring acoustic instruments and sounds, field recordings, digital instrumentation, and effects.

Alfréd Radok’s essay film Distant Journey (Daleká cesta, 1948) is a canonical classic of Czech cinema and a still unique answer to the question of how to express the inexpressible horrors of the Holocaust. However, such a self-reflexive film also needs a film theory that would extend this reflexivity in a videographic form, by means of using the images and sounds themselves and the context in which they appear in the digital space. The film’s “trick montage,” a technique that links storyline moments with archival footage of war destruction, Nazi emblems, and anti-Jewish terror within a single film shot, is thereby translated into the desktop interface and rethought anew.

Journey to the North Pole was the first film to be made about Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra. Cardew was an experimental English composer who founded the Scratch Orchestra in order to liberate avant-garde music from the control of the bourgeoisie.The orchestra had no restrictions to its membership and was an anarchic mix of amateurs, students, workers, professional musicians and composers. They wrote and performed graphic scores, group improvisations and deconstructed versions of the popular classics. Cardew sought, idealistically, to take the orchestra to the masses, and this tour captures them performing, predominantly outdoors, in North-East England.
