The film is a homage to beauty; beauty in a visual and aesthetic sense, but primarily spiritual beauty, the beauty that normally thrives best in concert with love if we let it breathe, that is; if we are prepared to accept it and share in it. The film is playful, it does not build on the bizarre, but on aesthetics, ethics and spirituality. We gradually realize that they do not have a problem accepting what has happened. She would just like to know where it happened, and He would like to see it all again.
A drama-documentary presented by Alan Yentob, with Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role. Every word spoken by the actors in this film is sourced from the letters that Van Gogh sent to his younger brother Theo, and of those around him. What emerges is a complex portrait of a sophisticated, civilised and yet tormented man.
