On September 1, 1990, at the Shoreline Amphitheater, the Garcia Band performed a particularly poignant kind of magic. A Grateful Dead show was originally scheduled for that date, but the Dead's brilliant, passionate keyboard player, Brent Mydland, had died of an overdose at age 37 in late July. Rather than cancel the gig, the Garcia Band stepped in to deliver one of their most heartfelt performances. Brainstorm is the best-known Latvian band in Europe. They started out 25 years ago, when most of them were in the same class at school. That was the time when people in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia joined hands to create the Baltic Way, and the fall of the Berlin Wall became a symbol of the hunger for freedom. The young men listened to U2, the Scorpions and Roxette and dreamed of becoming famous. Now Brainstorm is famous in Russia as well. The musicians are Latvians who live in Latvia, but they reap profits in Russia. Brainstorm has experienced the most interesting and intense period of modern European history. This period has also been a dramatic time for the band itself.

Once one of the world’s biggest lakes, the Aral Sea has all but vanished. Marcin Sauter’s film focuses on what remains in an area that once flourished, on the fates of people who had to adapt to life in the desert and now ponder over their solitude among the wrecks of ships and port cranes.

Individual short stories, organically combined into a single documentary narrative, acquaint the viewer with the inhabitants of Vyborg, with their traditions, customs and modern realities. The heroes of the plots were those people who create the modern history of their native land. Each of them has his own choice – Vyborg... for the rest of his life.
