The Crown Against Mafavuke is based on a South African trial from 1940. Mafavuke Ngcobo was a traditional herbalist who was accused by the local white medical establishment of ‘untraditional behaviour’. The film explores the ideological and commercial confrontation between two different yet intertwining medicinal traditions and their uses of plants, with slippages across gender and race further questioning notions of purity and origination. The re-imagined court case is filmed at the Palace of Justice in Pretoria, where the Rivonia trial was held that sent Mandela and his fellow accused to Robben Island prison.

Older Than The Crown follows the trial of Sinixt tribal member Rick Desautel who in 2010 was charged with hunting as a non-resident and without a proper permit in Canada. Rick harvested an elk on the ancestral land of the Sinixt people in Vallican, British Columbia, Canada. To the Sinixt, hunting on ancestral land is an aboriginal right gifted to them by Creator. It’s a right that has legally been denied to the Sinixt people since 1956 when the Canadian government unjustly declared them extinct in Canada, despite the nearly 3,000 members existing on the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington State. Now with the Desautel Hunting Case, the Sinixt people have a chance to not only bring light to their unjust extinction by the Canadian government but also to abolish the declaration completely.

The woman he got it from sold it to the wrong person and pursues him back to his home in Lebanon, Indiana, as does the villain for whom she stole it. Everyone in town soon learns Me has the jewel, including a friend who wants it for his wife, a meter reader who wants to quit, some kids and a teenager who rides a hobbyhorse, and a virtually silent thief, who speaks with intertitles.
