By taking TRI-X black & white reversal 16mm film and capturing 900 different stills from NC-17 rated films through a 35mm photo camera and projecting the images at the standard cinematic frame rate of 24 frames per second, Freytag’s Pyramid of Climactic Light interrogates the relationship between the individual film frame and the audience’s perception of ideology projected from the relationship between each frame. The images that I selected were bodies of individuals in non-violent and sentimental acts of love and friendship.
Weaving together scenes from the movie Contact with 16mm footage shot at the Very Large Array — the radio astronomy observatory in New Mexico, as well as three Mayan pyramids across the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico—Calakmul, Uxmal, and Cobá, Pyramids and Parabolas I is the first of a multi-episodic infinite film series that imagines how geometric forms can function as portals into parallel dimensions. The parabolic shape of modern day radio telescopes—made to listen to signals emitted by celestial objects and events, and similarly the pyramidal shapes of ancient Mayan monoliths—where priests communed with forces beyond the human realm, can both be understood as ways of transiting into alternate universes.
In search of landscapes on Earth that resemble those from other planets, Pyramids and Parabolas III is a structuralist film that captures footage from solo expeditions to Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Iceland, and the Arctic over the last six years. The film unfolds as a series of psychic states, presenting the body as an instrument for exploring physical and psychological landscapes. It weaves together travelogues, personal anecdotes, and family history — aiming to extend beyond the limits of human comprehension.
Calling attention to the body to foreground the experiential aspect of the film, the second episode of Pyramids and Parabolas begins with a two-minute body scan meditation in the dark. Followed by a quote from the Three Body Problem, “Three days from now, between one and five in the morning, the entire universe will flicker for you” — which acts almost like a spell, the film is a travelogue of the artist journeying through surreal and sublime landscapes in nature. Bookended by the building of a NASA JOVE radio telescope in Twentynine Palms, California, the collage film is the artist’s quest to touch the cosmos and connect with the universe through flesh.
