Venom - A Diva in Exile is based on the short story by writer Zsófia Bán, on the troubling story of Hungarian singer and film star Katalin Karády. She was accused of spying during the war, imprisoned, tortured and banned on radio and in theatres in her home country. After her release, she worked hard to save numerous Jewish families, while the disappearance of the man she was linked to, first arrested by the Nazis and then by the Soviets, threw her into despair. Heartbroken, marginalized and banished in the new communist regime, she went into exile in 1951, spending fifteen years in Sao Paulo, Brazil, never to act in a film or on stage again. Then he lived in New York until his death (1990).
Like Zifel and Kalle, the German Jewish refugees in Bertolt Brecht’s Refugee Conversations (1940), from which this project is inspired, Fadi and Rami also live in exile. They are however Syrian-Lebanese and live in 2021 in a European city on the shore of the Mediterranean. When they meet for the frst time at the bufet of the ferry terminal, they engage in a conversation without introduction. What follows is a series of unexpected meetings and unforeseen discussions in which everyday life and political considerations, the individual and the general, are approached sometimes with irony mixed with melancholy, and other times with the play of paradox. On the backdrop of the so-called «migration crisis in Europe», Fadi and Rami freely discuss a variety of topics. Their of-the-cuf exchanges often come back to the cause of their exile: the post-colonial war. Exile, as we know, sharpens the mind. With dialectic and humor, they chat about all kinds of things.

Marcelo Novais Teles, a young Brazilian, arrives in Paris to become an actor. But he is caught up in a very intense love as well as professional life; that's when he choses to film everything as time progresses. Dinner, parties, rehearsals, friendly and family meetings, falsely profound conversations, trips to Europe, etc. THE EXILED is the magnificently happy montage of these sequences, home movie of an obvious and chronic happiness, where the insolence of youth and its beauty are displayed. There are many well-known faces of actors who have become famous since then, which adds to the charm continuously lavished by these innocent images. Self-portrait in the form of a generational portrait, where the love of art crosses the art of living, the exile here is in the land of happiness.
Mavi Sürgün is a fictionalized account of one period of the life of a Turkish journalist who was condemned to exile for an article he wrote in 1925. He turned his punishment into a reward by creating a little paradise in what is today the holiday resort, Bodrum. In fact he is considered by some to be the first ecologist. The film concentrates on this latter aspect of his character and through flashbacks portrays the inner turmoil of a man who is trying to come to terms with his past. The slow pace is somewhat of a drawback, the flashbacks are often confusing and the protagonist is not always very convincing. But the photography of the country side is exceptional Kenan Ormanlar and the short appearance by a very theatrical Hanna Schygulla of Fassbinder fame adds a little spice to the drama.
