In the Aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster and the “death” of the Soviet Union, a team of Russian scientists seeks “immortality” on a tiny Greek island and in the philosophy of Pythagoras. Along with a survivor of the disaster, the nuclear physicist Andrei, as their leader, they create a commune on the island and establish there an esoteric school. The film presents the development of their ideas and their adventurous relation with the local community, as it is now Greece’s turn to sink inside its own big crisis. A quest for certainties in an era of total uncertainty.

This movie shows the simplest difference between Europe and former Soviet Union. It is the eponymous 89 mm - Russian train tracks are 89 mm wider than tracks in European countries. And because of this fact, it is not easy to go through the Soviet border by train in Brest as the passengers in the film do.
The European Union is a constantly challenged system, starting with the question of language. With 24 languages represented, how to speak with one voice? Shielded from public view in small caulked booths, European interpreters witness on a daily basis all major current challenges in international negotiations. The Diplomats of the Shadows is a reflection of the cultural and linguistic diversity essential to the proper functioning of the European Union’s democratic system, which has no equivalent in the world. From the war in Ukraine to the energy crisis, and the migration policy, this film takes us into the current geopolitical issues through the lens of European interpreters. In this immersive experience within the European institutions, the director raises a fundamental question: in these times of upheaval, how to preserve unity in diversity, the very essence of the European construction?

That the Cold War did not end in blood and tears was Radio Free Europe’s ultimate victory. “To Russia with Love” tells how it won the hearts and minds of the people behind the Iron Curtain and brought down the Communist rule over Eastern Europe. The story of Radio Free Europe has not been told on film so far. The documentary retells the story of Radio Free Europe from the point of view of the RFE journalists and their audience. It addresses topics like: What did it mean for a dissident to broadcast to the country they still called home, to fight against a government, which had forced them to leave? How much was their everyday life ruled by fear for the family members they had left behind, knowing that their own actions could possibly threaten their relatives in the East? “To Russia with Love” also pictures how communist regimes fought the station.
