South African filmmaker Jo Menell is most well-known for the cult feminist classic, Dick (1989), which featured 1000 penises accompanied by an audio commentary from women. The nature of that film, however, belies a rich career in film and journalism that spans the Vietnam War, the Allende government in Chile, the emergence of gay rights in San Francisco, a 1981 Bob Marley documentary, an Oscar nominated film about Nelson Mandela (1997), and the Street Talk television series, as well as close relationships with key figures from the 20th Century. Born into a life of privilege, Menell had progressive political inclinations and soon left apartheid South Africa for Britain where he was schooled in the ways and connections of the British ruling class. The film chronicles his amazingly rich and varied life using archival footage alongside a series of interviews conducted with Menell while his portrait was being painted by Cape Town artist Beezy Bailey.

American Motor Company (2010) is a film about mid-20th century African American migration. Has two men installing a billboard. The billboard is based on mid-20th century advertisement geared for African Americans to migrate north to work in the automobile factory during the industrial boom of the late 50s and early 60s. The title AMC refers to American Motor Company, a defunct automobile company. In collaboration with Carmen Higginbotham.

American Byzantine follows the creation of a remarkable new work of art, the 38-ton marble relief, The Universal Call to Holiness. Designed by American artist George Carr and carved in Italy, the work now adorns the rear wall of the largest Catholic church in the western hemisphere, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. The Shrine is a uniquely American church that combines both the art and architecture reminiscent of ancient Byzantium with more than 60 smaller ethnic chapels that honor the faith of millions of American immigrants.
