On March 11, 2011, a tsunami devastated the coasts of Japan, claiming thousands of lives. Today, the scars of this tragedy remain visible. Yet in spite of this, people, plants and animals alike continue to exist. Through striking images shot on land and in the sea, Jennifer Rainsford’s film celebrates human resilience and the endless beauty of our planet.

Sarah is part of a strange, marginal ménage à trois with her contemporary Louis and the older Ji-Guy, she fills her days with petty crime. During the day she hangs around with Louis by motorways, where she deceives and robs innocent people offering a lift. One day things go wrong: a driver dies during a robbery attempt. Sarah can’t stop thinking about the dead man and goes looking for the wife he left behind. In her, she finally finds something of the security and friendship she had unconsciously been seeking for so long. But her alternative family doesn’t just let her go.

Late night, a commuter bus was speeding along the coastal highway when, suddenly, a loud and panicky scream pierced the night’s silence. This wealthy and elderly lady had just woken to find her precious necklace stolen. What follows was a series of intriguing turn of events, chaotic mob justice, vengeful lynching, as the truth behind the theft unfolds. The film climaxes as the commuter bus went ablaze, burning and glittering against the pitch-dark coastal sky.

Space flight is a unique experience for a human being, upending the body’s mechanics as much as its metaphysical considerations. On board the International Space Station, we observe the astronauts' hearts and the doctor who monitors their every beat. Jennifer Rainsford (Our Heartbeats Are Connected Through Exploding Stars, VdR 2022) delivers a lyrically-accented scientific film, rendered with a weightless touch.

'Symphony' portrays a sentient creature trying to escape from a reality of being swept away and assimilated into the mainstream, regardless of its own will. The topic of this abstractedly crafted animation applies to anything that struggles to be free. It can be a phenomenon occurring deep within the mind, or an individual confronting the standardized masses. There is no concrete answer to these questions; the only role I play is to showcase reality. The solution and conclusion of the story is open for interpretation.

Distant lights reveal the outline of a city. Illuminated ships cross the water with sleeping people on board and the night appears to become liquid. The sower of stars wakes them and travels with them through the city. They talk about this and that – and say goodbye to everything.
